Wizkid at 31: One of Africa’s greatest exports

Ayo Balogun aka Wizkid turns 31 today, 16 July, 2021 and there is so much to talk about. Since he broke into the limelite with the song Tease Me, he has not slowed down.

There is no reason not to love Wizkid, not only did he revolutionalize a sound, he exported it and made it one of the biggest sounds out of Africa.

First, Wizkid doesn’t even make you think he has aged a bit even though we all know he has spent a decade in the industry. His mastery of the craft and even his unique way of carrying his fans along is something only him can pull off.

Wizkid is the only one that can be quiet and still create a buzz, other artistes actually have to make noise, go for interviews and drop snippets. Wizkid can be silent on social media and there would still be a buzz.

Which is why whenever he says new music is coming (even though many of his fans know it could take years), they would still anticipate it and be expectant.

With his last album Made in Lagos pulling numbers every day and turning people into disciples, he is just getting started. Many fans are already anticipating a Grammy nomination next year already.

His latest album actually showed what he has always wanted to do, take over the international scene. That album has opened the eyes of music lovers around the world to African music or Afrobeats and made them realize it is not only about the sound, it is about the vibe, the lyrics and every other thing.

Wizkid is celebrating his 31st birthday having achieved what he would have only dreamed of when he started. Won a Grammy, his album on the Billboard charts, his song Essence doing well on the Top 50 charts. What else?

It is now time to solidify the stance and make the sound not one that would fade away but a genre that would hold its own in the international scene. Wizkid is more or less the one pushing that frontier now and every other person just has to tap into it.

From the days of Pakurumo to Azonto, then Babanla before Ojuelegba which is a certified classic, Wizkid has a discography that speaks for itself.

Happy birthday to Wizkid as he turns 31, the Ojuelegba boy that is now an international star. Dreams do come true.
