Nigerian wrestler Blessing Oborududu is set to win Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo.
After a lot of disappointments, Nigerian wrestler Oborududu has qualified for the wrestling final.
She qualified after defeating Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzonbold in the Women’s freestyle 68kg category.
She outscored Soronzonbold in the semifinal 7-2 to advance to the final of the category.
This is Oborududu’s third appearance at the Olympics and it would be Nigeria’s first medal in wrestling.
She has won gold for the last 11 years at the African Wrestling Championship except in 2012 when she didn’t attend
The 32-year-old was full of joy as she danced around the arena with are coach lifting her up in jubilation.
She previously defeated Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan 13-2 in the quarter-finals, an impressive show.
Recall that other athletes have been protesting because they were disqualified from participating in the competition.
After that, Divine Oduduru has been disqualified for making a false start in the heats.
Similarly, Blessing Okagbare was also disqualified for testing positive to growth hormones.
Nigeria’s 100m hopeful, Enoch Adegoke could not finish the race after he pulled an hamstring in the final.
Grace Nwokocha also could not capitalize on her previous performance as she didn’t qualify for the 200m final.
