Nigeria’s hopes of winning a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through Tennis has been dashed.
Offiong Edem has crashed out of the Women’s singles event of the competition after losing 1-4 (13-11,2-11,2-11,8-11,6-11) in the second round to USA’s Lily Zhang.
She won her first game against Dora Madarasz last weekend but could not get past the American who is ranked much higher.

Edem joined Olufunke Oshonaike who has represented Nigeria at the Olympics 7 times (joint most appearances alongside Segun Toriola) and Olajide Omotayo out of the competition.
Aruna Quadri was the only hope left for Nigeria to win a medal in Table Tennis at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but he also lost his game on Tuesday morning.
Quadri lost 4-2 to Brazilian Gustavo Tsuboi who came from a game down to eventually win 15-13,9-11,6-11,11-7,7-11,5-11. Quadri gave the game a fight as he won the first game 15-13 before the Brazilian won the second game 9-11 to draw level.
Nigeria’s hopes of winning a medal at the competition now grows slimmer especially with the Basketball team also not carrying the form from the warm up games into the competition proper.
Nigeria will also be hoping the Track and fields events are something to be hopeful about as we have always had some good outing during those games.
Olufunke Oshonaike has also decided to retire after representing Nigeria 7 times in the competition. It is now left for the next generation to pick up the baton from where she left off.
