Tuchel substituted Mendy for Kepa as the game was heading for penalties.
Villareal looked like favorites as they defeated Manchester United in the Europa final to lift the title.
Havertz took the first kick for Chelsea and missed which means the Blues are off to a bad start.
However, Kepa was on hand to save Raul Albiol’s spotkick to give Chelsea the victory.
With 13,000 spectators in the stadium to watch Chelsea defeat Villareal in the Super Cup.
