African style of football is still the same at AFCON 2021

African style of play

African style of football is once again the topic of discussion as AFCON 2021 kicked off on Sunday.

Many fans could not hide either their excitement or disdain towards the style of play.

Two minutes into the tournament in the game between Cameroon and Burkina Faso, the referee has already issued a yellow card.

The tackle was so rough that it could easily have been a red card.

Clearly, the referee didn’t want the tournament to begin on such a bad note which was why he gave a yellow.

It was like the teams decided to focus on physicality rather than tactics or techniques.

The tournament also had VAR, which was a first at AFCON and many fans were skeptical already.

ICYMI: Who will win AFCON 2021?

There will still be more conversations as the tournament advances especially in terms of crucial decisions.

Teams have shown more physicality than technique so far and it might be the same incoming games.

Fans will be expecting teams like Senegal, Egypt, Nigeria with a lot of players in foreign leagues to be more technical.

However, African football is mostly not like that as the opposing team will continue to make horrible tackles anywhere.

While many fans are still angry at Klopp’s comment about the tournament, other fans are using the style of play as justification.

Coupled with the fact that Cameroon is also in the midst of a crisis which could still truncate the tournament.

These are still early days for the tournament after only just 2 games.

The African style of football is one of the reasons AFCON is different and stars are known every tournament.

The host do not look strong enough to win the tournament, but these are still early days.

Hopefully, there would be more beautiful football moving forward. We simply cannot wait.
